Exploding Head Syndrome
Exploding head syndrome is a benign condition where sufferers are awakened by the sound of an explosion which is not caused by a dream. This was first identified in 1988 by a British physician (Dr. Explodinghead, no doubt). Sufferers are awakened 1 - 2 hours after falling asleep by what some describe as a gunshot or roar.
These attacks can be acute (i.e. one-time events) or chronic, and some doctors think there is a correlation with stress. Even if it is true, isn't it a bit cliche? (My right hand could be rotting away and some doctor would blame it on stress.)
Anyway, exploding head syndrome isn't glamorous nor is it a reason to wrap your head in duct tape to prevent a mess on the floor, but it was blog-worthy nonetheless.
