This gem comes to us from National Geographic's August 2006 article of the same name. The National Safety Council (NSC) has republished a portion of the study on their site. I found it very interesting and a good measure of what we should really be afraid. They predict, for example, that a person born in 2003 has lifetime odds of dying in the following manner:

• Assault by firearm: 1 in 314
  
• Caught Between Objects: 1 in 27,559
• Legal execution: 1 in 62,468
• Lightning: 1 in 79,746
  
• Contact with venomous spiders: 1 in 468,508
