Shared Squadrons

Have you ever wanted to own and fly your own jet warbird? Shared Squadrons may be your solution. This aircraft management company's slogan is "You fly, We do the rest." Here's how it works:

Currently Shared Squadrons acquires and restores L-39 jets. They then sell the jet in four shares. So, for an investment of $100,000, you too can own 1/4 of a jet. (remember - Shared Squadron) In addition you pay a (steep) monthly maintenance fee which seems to vary depending on which airport your jet calls home. The upside? The company takes care of the housing, maintenance, insurance, and consumables (brakes, tires, etc.). You just show up and fly your fighter jet.

It's a fantastic idea, but I do have one reservation. If I had a plane, I would want to be able to fly it somewhere. To a vacation spot, down the coast, etc. With the idea of shared ownership, I doubt you would be able to fly down to Florida for a long weekend. Of course, I really don't know if you can fit a suitcase in a jet.

Regardless, it's an awesome idea, and it brings jet ownership into the realm of possibilities for those people who can't afford to purchase a jet and accompanying staff for the upkeep. One last reminder, though: If you buy-in, I expect a ride!

The average private pilot flies less than 50 hours a year which is not very much at all. Since its 1/4 owned you could easily schedule a long weekend or entire week with the plane if you wanted to .

Since you're not carrying any traditional payload you can easily have external baggage nacelles attached to the plane. I also believe that the civilian L-39 has storage space in the nose of the airplane.

Really the only downside is that in most VFR airspace below 10,000 feet you’re limited to 250 knots. Oh yeah, and keep in mind that a full tank of gas will run your ~$1500+.

Oh yeah, and a type rating on the bird is going to run you $8,000-$10,000.
